At least two people have been left dead and twenty people injured after an explosion at a nursing home located in Bristol, PA. The explosion was reportedly the result of a gas leak, which allegedly went ignored by the nursing home’s owners until it was too late. It is estimated that more than 100 residents have been left without living accommodations due to the explosion and subsequent fire, and the incident is now under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).

Confusion and Sorrow in the Wake of Nursing Home Explosion

On December 23, 2025, there was a sudden explosion at the Bristol Health & Rehab Center, which is believed to have come from a gas leak in the building’s basement. One resident and one nurse died in the blast, with twenty others left injured and the rest of the residents left without appropriate accommodations. Many of the residents suddenly found themselves back in the care of their families, who are struggling to meet their healthcare needs in the wake of this emergency.

Complaints of Gas Smell Went Ignored

Prior to the explosion, a number of employees, residents, and visitors complained of a gas smell. For some, the smell had been going on for hours before the accident, while some claim they had been smelling gas for days or even weeks prior. Regardless, however, these complaints were ignored by the owners, the Saber Healthcare Group, who only chose to contact the utility company and not the fire department, going against the typical response for a suspected gas leak.

Cause of the Blast is Under Investigation

The NTSB is investigating the potential cause of the explosion to determine if it is now safe for residents to return to the building. However, many residents and their families are reluctant to go back to the facility, now that they know that such a serious issue may have been grossly mishandled. Even if the problem is successfully identified and fixed, the confidence of residents and families in their ability to keep residents safe and healthy has been shaken.

The Legal Responsibilities of Nursing Homes

When they fail to do so, incidents like these may become inevitable.
