Hershey’s is facing a federal lawsuit that has accused it of having wrappers containing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). This has resulted in Hershey’s candy containing elevated levels of these potentially dangerous “forever chemicals.” This is particularly concerning given the popularity of these products with children, who may be at increased risk of health problems from PFAS exposure.
What is Hershey’s?
The Hershey Company, also known commonly as Hershey’s, is one of the largest manufacturers of chocolate and candy snacks. Among other things, they are responsible for making some of the most popular brands of snack food, including Hershey’s Chocolate Bars, Hershey’s Kisses, Mr. Goodbar, Krackel, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, and more. The Pennsylvania-based company is estimated to make about $9 billion in revenue each year, and employs more than 20,000 people.
What is Hershey’s Accused Of Doing?
According to the lawsuit, which was filed in Pennsylvania federal court, a number of Hershey’s products were found to contain elevated levels of PFAS. This contamination seemingly came from the candy wrappers, which appear to have these chemicals used as part of their creation. This means that people who consume Hershey’s products may be at risk of exposure to PFAS.
What Are the Dangers of PFAS?
PFAS are a class of chemicals that are collectively referred to as “forever chemicals,” due to the fact that they do not readily break down in nature or inside the human body. Exposure to PFAS is associated with a lowered immune system response, high cholesterol, elevated liver enzymes, thyroid dysfunction, and an increased risk of certain types of cancer. Additionally, pregnant women with elevated levels of PFAS are at higher risk of birth complications, and children may experience developmental delays.
Why Does This Matter?
This lawsuit is important because it exposes the prevalence of these chemicals in everyday products, including food given freely to children. This is especially devastating given that the lawsuit was filed shortly before Halloween, when children across the US will be happily consuming Hershey’s candy. Ensuring that children remain safe on this normally happy holiday includes ensuring their snacks are not contaminated with potentially dangerous chemicals.
