According to information from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), the number of e-bike and e-scooter accidents went up about 40% between 2024 and 2025 in Philadelphia. This resulted in there being slightly more e-bike accidents in 2025 than there were accidents involving traditional bicycles. While this is partly a sign of the increased popularity of these vehicles, it is also a potentially worrying sign of careless driving habits that may put people’s lives at risk.

E-Bike and E-Scooter Accidents Up 40% in Philadelphia Year Over Year

Between 2024 and 2025, the number of electric bike and scooter accidents increased from 140 to 197, a roughly 40% increase year over year. At the same time, the number of accidents involving traditional mechanical bicycles declined slightly, from 213 accidents to 193 accidents, meaning there were more e-bike accidents than conventional bike accidents. These resulted in four fatalities and 193 non-fatal injuries among e-bike riders.

What Makes E-Bikes Dangerous

Because they are referred to as “bikes,” people often underestimate the dangers posed by e-bikes and e-scooters. These vehicles are powered by electric motors, and conventional e-bikes can reach speeds of nearly 30 miles per hour, with higher performance models potentially able to reach speeds of over 60 miles per hour. This means that an accident involving an e-bike or e-scooter can result in shockingly severe injuries, which can leave victims with lasting health issues even when they are not fatal.

Contributing Factors to E-Bike Accidents

One of the biggest reasons for the increase in e-bike accidents is, quite simply, that more people are buying e-bikes and e-scooters. However, there is also the issue of regulation: these vehicles are relatively new, and legal standards for safe manufacturing and operation are haphazard at best. Their exact legality can vary wildly not just from state to state, but even between individual municipalities.

There is also the issue of who is operating these vehicles, and how. Many places do not have rules about minors operating e-bikes or e-scooters, nor do they necessarily prohibit dangerous driving practices like driving without a helmet or riding tandem. This leads to a shocking number of dangerous drivers, many of whom are under the age of 18, and many of whom either do not understand or do not care about the dangers of reckless driving.
