Three major chemical manufacturers have been accused of attempting to cover up the risks of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) that were used in the manufacturing of carpets up until 2020. In a recent class action lawsuit, 3M, Corteva, and Chemours were accused of concealing the health effects of these “forever chemicals,” leading people to become exposed to them. The lawsuit is seeking to cover the costs of replacing affected carpets, as well as punitive damages against the manufacturers.
What Are PFAS?
PFAS are a class of substances commonly used in a number of industrial and commercial products. They have been colloquially dubbed “forever chemicals” due to their resistance to breaking down, either in the environment or in people’s bodies, which makes them useful but also difficult to safely dispose of. This also makes it easier for the chemicals to build up to potentially toxic levels over time.
What Are the Effects of PFAS Exposure?
PFAS exposure has been linked to a number of serious health conditions. These include things like liver damage, depressed immune system response, and an increased risk of certain cancers. It also has been found to cause birth defects to children exposed in the womb, and has been correlated with a low birth weight.
What is This Lawsuit About?
The three named chemical companies were sued after evidence was found that the companies knew about the potential dangers of PFAS, going back as early as the 1950s. Despite this, the companies continued to use these chemicals in their products, including in carpets, for decades. Moreover, they took efforts to stifle reports of scientific evidence that proved the potential health risks of PFAS.

The lawsuit seeks to hold chemical manufacturers responsible for the harm caused by PFAS. Thanks to their efforts to cover up evidence of the dangers of PFAS, many more people were exposed to these chemicals, and may have suffered severe harm as a result.
